BS8555

The BS8555 is a guide to the phased implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS). It has 6 stages that lead to completion of the criteria for ISO 14001. Each phase can be independently verified.

The standard provides a framework for companies to manage environmental issues and supply chains. The optional sixth level provides certification to the ISO 14001 standard or prepares the organisation for registration Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

This standard does not replace the existing EMS standard but provides a step-by-step approach.

The performance indicators and evaluation techniques are based on the ISO 14031 standard and are monitored over time. Evidence of progress is gathered along the way, which can be used to demonstrate an organisation's environmental practices to existing and potential customers.

Participants may be audited on each level and awarded a certificate of achievement before moving to the next level.

The Benefits of BS8555

  • Because the approach works in stages companies can decide to progress to the level, which is most appropriate for them. This is a key advantage for businesses.
  • An EMS helps a company to manage their environmental impacts. It allows the firm to address and plan for environmental improvements in a structured manner.
