End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) Directive

(2000/53/EC)

The ELVs Directive was passed as European law in October 2000. It enforces the de-pollution of vehicles prior to dismantling, recycling or disposal. Those who de-pollute ELV's must have a licence to do so. It also ensures that producers reduce the hazardous material used in vehicles and increase their recycling potential. By 2007 the producer will also have to pay for the costs of treating ELVs. For further information please visit www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability and netregs.
