Green Building DesignBuildings account for approximately half of the UK's total emissions of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).Green building and sustainable construction is becoming increasingly popular in our society. As buildings consume significant resources, it is important that green buildings cause the minimum impact on the environment. Green building design should therefore incorporate sound energy and environmental systems that conserve energy and resources, minimise waste and are designed for low maintenance and a long life. They have many attractive benefits including: lower energy consumption 'designed in' from the beginning; a more pleasant living and working environment which enhances employee satisfaction and productivity; increased 'green' profile for your organisation. There are many different areas of specialist help and advice: The Carbon Trust The Carbon Trust's Design Advice service offers professional, independent and objective advice on energy efficient and environmentally sound building design. Organisations are offered free initial design consultancy on a building project, further consultancy, with partial funding may be available. For more information call the Helpline on 0800 585794 or visit www.thecarbontrust.co.uk/energy and click on Design Advice. Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) The AECB is the leading independent environmental building trade organisation in the UK. The Association, its network of members and publications provide a wealth of knowledge to enable you or your company to help the environment. Formed in 1989 the AECB encourages greater environmental awareness within the building construction industry. Its diverse membership encompasses almost every sector of building construction and management. Since its launch in 1990, BREEAM has been increasingly accepted in the UK construction and property sectors as offering best practice in environmental design and management. BREEAM covers a range of building types including offices, industrial units, retail units and schools. Although BREEAM is voluntary, it now must be carried out on all Government Buildings. www.breeam.org The Green Building Press Information to help you create green, healthy and ecological homes and buildings.
