York 'Green' Business Club - November 2006 Seminar

We would like to invite you to attend the fifth York Green Business Club Environmental Seminar. The York Green Business Club (which is completely free) is run by The City of York Council and the York and North Yorkshire Business Environmental Forum and provides free environmental help and advice to businesses and organisations. By becoming a member you can learn how to save money by adopting environmentally friendly business practices. The Club holds 2 seminars a year focusing on many different aspects of environmental management including waste and recycling, energy efficiency, environmental legislation and other environmental issues that are important to you as a business.

The seminar will be held at Bedern Hall in the centre of York on Wednesday 22nd November 2006. It will begin at 7.45am for an 8am start and will finish at 9.30 / 9.45am. A free breakfast snack will be provided. You must register to reserve a place.

The seminar will include:

  • Introduction by Councillor Andrew Waller
  • Kristina Peat, City of York Council - York Eco Depot
  • Matt Freestone, Envirowise - 'Your FastTrack to Cost Savings'
  • Graeme Precious, The Carbon Trust, - Low Carbon Buildings Programme
  • Tamsin Treasure- Jones, Waste and Sustainability Project - Waste Training Programme
  • City of York Council and Yorwaste Ltd - open discussion on recycling provisions within the City.

As highlighted above, there will be the opportunity to discuss the current business cardboard recycling service and also other recycling provisions with representatives from Yorwaste Ltd and City of York Council. However, in order to do this effectively, we would be grateful if you could provide us with some information about your waste. There are a few questions on the fax back form on the reverse of this letter.

The long term aim of the club is to demonstrate York's commitment to the environment and work in partnership with other business support groups to increase the image of the city and ensure it remains a popular and attractive place to live, visit and work. The club will also provide an excellent opportunity to network and share good business practices, and collectively ensure less waste is sent to landfill and less carbon is emitted to the atmosphere.

If you are a business in York city centre we would like you to answer the following questions in order to help us get a better picture for providing recycling services.

1. What are the main different types of waste from your business? Please give as a percentage. (i.e. 70% cardboard, 10% paper, 10% plastic, 10% glass).

2. If waste was segregated and collected for recycling, do you have any storage space and for how long could it be stored? Please give details.

3. Between which hours could your waste be collected for recycling?

4. Do you have the resources (staff?) to separate the waste for recycling?
