Taking transport action can help reduce haulage costs and save employees money travelling to and from work. This is becoming more apparent with a growing number of traffic control measures including congestion charging and road tolls.

Organisations can adopt a 'Travel Plan' which is a commitment to show that your organisation has addressed the issue of the impact of travel not only on your business but the surrounding community. A large part of a successful travel plan is staff training and awareness. Staff will often need help and guidance to change their transport routines. For example, to car share, staff may need to meet other people who live in the same area, which may require organisation from management.

Transport management must be written into an Environmental Management System (EMS) and must be considered to achieve standards such as the ISO 14001.
